Plantation crops experience significant yield losses due to late disease diagnosis and the absence of user-friendly management systems, particularly for small and marginal farmers. This project proposes the development of a drone-assisted early diagnosis and precision management system using high-resolution multispectral and thermal imaging integrated with machine learning algorithms and GPS mapping. The system will detect disease-specific stress signatures, pinpoint affected zones, and enable targeted application of fungicides or biocontrol agents, reducing pesticide overuse and input costs. The solution aims to improve crop health, enhance productivity, and promote sustainable disease management practices, with potential scalability across multiple plantation crops and diverse agro-climatic zones.
The project will utilize drones equipped with high-resolution multispectral and thermal cameras to monitor plantation crops. Data will be processed using advanced image analysis and machine learning algorithms to detect early symptoms such as chlorosis, necrosis, and stress patterns. GPS-enabled mapping will allow precise identification of infected areas. The system will recommend targeted treatment using either fungicides or biocontrol agents, thereby reducing indiscriminate pesticide use. Preliminary trials in palm plantations have demonstrated feasibility. The PI is a certified DGCA drone pilot, ensuring regulatory compliance. Collaboration with BharatRohan Airborne Innovations Ltd. will provide expertise in drone-based agricultural data collection and processing.
